My life in a whirlwind

Well unfortunately I didn't get to write that great post about my cousins' weekend. I wanted to. I really did, but life just somehow got in the way. I've been busy, busy, busy since that weekend in Atlanta and haven't had much time to sit down and just chill out long enough to write anything. However, it seems like today I'm finally getting that chance.

Ok, so why has my life been such a whirlwind? It's called NEW JOB!

Yeah, I said it. Can you like a job and be stressed out by it at the same time? I've been there now for 3 weeks. The first week was ok, but the second week had me seriously considering whether I had made a huge mistake. The first day of my second week I was told that I was dressing too young. (What?! Me, Miss Conservative?!) Now she didn't mean that I was dressed too young because my clothes were too tight or my shirt plunged too low. I had on a pair of slacks, a satin blouse, and pumps. I was told that I looked too young because of my satin blouse had poofy sleeves, which my supervisor felt looked like a doll baby shirt...sigh. Well I saw Robin Roberts on Good Morning America wearing a similar poofy sleeved shirt the other day. I guess she's not conservative either...hmph! Hey, I am a youthful looking 35 year old, and I like that my clothes make me look my age. Am I supposed to apologize for that?! That's a good thing to me.

Anyway, I was more than a little put out by the observation initially, but now I've accepted that I need to dress even more conservatively and I guess wear a blazer every now and then...sigh. Apparently blazers equal looking older and generating more respect from my male counterparts in the office. (I sooo envy the employees of the design firm down the hall who can wear jeans and SHORTS to work...sigh.)

The second week also included a bunch of fires that needed to be put out. I luckily was able to handle them but it provided me with a real close view of how much of a pressure cooker this job can be. So far I've met the challenge. I really like the work, but I'm keeping my eyes wide open because I can see that the volume at times can be overwhelming and the expectations are high (possibly too high...I found out I'm the 4th person in a short amount of time to have this position!). Not only will they be evaluating me during my 90-day probationary period, but I will also be evaluating the company and this position as well, wondering whether this job is really the place for me.

My third week was good, so that's a positive. As I move into my fourth week, I'll just have to see.
